  1. I feel cold right now, I've felt this way for a few minutes. also I feel a little bit thirsty and I like Coke, so if you're going to the fridge...
  2. I know I am! Isn't it cool? That's why I am currently riding on a sweet-ass unicorn!
  3. Points for a great thread title... But I really don't think poo will be a problem. If poo accumulates around someone's house it won't take long before they are willing to spend any amount of money to get rid of it! and capitalism is all about solving problems that people are willing to throw money at. Hundreds of years ago when people were infinitely poorer and ignorant... they still didn't like having poo sit around their houses, so in a wealthy and health conscious society there will be loads of entrepreneurs lining up to solve the problem.
  4. I suspect the appreciation for videos would be higher :-D I never watch videos because it's too much of a bother in China with the great firewall... and also who has time to sit in front of a computer and watch videos?
  5. So, in another great win for the big book of choose your own morality... I give you christian DeFOOing. There's a group calling themselves Luke 17:3 ministries and they base their organisation on the verse "If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them." http://www.luke173ministries.org/ They totally advocate defooing from unrepentant abusers in your life... I don't anticipate they will become a large movement, but it's an interesting change in the cultural winds. and hey it's the internet, and they could probably use a competent web designer :-D I just thought maybe this would make your day brighter
  6. You are not reading very well.
  7. You use the phrase "Toxic parents" have you read "Toxic Parents" by Susan Forward? http://www.amazon.com/Toxic-Parents-Overcoming-Hurtful-Reclaiming/dp/0553381407 It might be helpful to give it a read. I think dsayers has been doing yeoman's work in this thread and I'm afraid he hasn't accomplished much. I don't think you have to hate your dad (what good would it do anyway? He's not around anymore) but you have to accept that he made some very poor decisions and did things that were very harmful to you. Your story about your father doesn't make sense at all. You say he was a good man/father, but he's got a pretty girl on his arm who didn't understand how important his son was to him. The story doesn't make sense, if you were important he would have lived closer so that he could see you for more than a few weeks, and he would have mentioned how important you are and she would have known that ahead of time. Also, if he was as good as you say, he could have found a job for which he didn't travel as much. I know how much my daughter misses me when I'm gone for a few hours let alone gone for days or weeks.
  8. I like topics where I can't see the first post because the user has a rating that is too low... Saves valuable time. Out of curiosity I sometimes check to see what's so bad about the poster in question... I always regret doing so. I just have to reiterate how much I love the feature and the wisdom of crowds (especially FDR crowds )
  9. A person on the street does not give permission to have their ear-drums moved, there is no social contract. It just so happens that most people are not bothered by having their ear-drums moved while walking down the street, and also the "damage" is so small that hardly anyone cares. But let's say you are a member of some crazed religious sect that doesn't like sound, or want to be talked to... or whatever. He's walking down the street and is subject to people talking because he is being forced to use the roads to get to where he needs to go, so therefore it is immoral to talk to him... a very tiny immorality and not likely one that anyone would ever bother to punish.
  10. This seems to not be the best thread for a great discussion of ideas.... but I'll take thee bait anyway. All of your questions suffer from being set in a statist world-view, we will assume that all of the examples are in a free society, so there will be no such thing as common land (especially in an area like a city where there would be more people) and also A and C would be permissible given certain conditions. A - Someone owns the road, you are damaging the users of his property and he has a valid complaint to take to the DRO. If you are holding a concert or rave, or just love loud noise and you have spoken to the DRO and the owner of the road, and you have all taken steps to warn people about the dangers of the noise and help prevent hearing damage... If someone still suffers hearing damage, they will likely be recompensed by the DRO. If you haven't prepared, then you'll probably be asked to stop and need to make restitution to the people you have harmed. B- There is actual invasion of the other person's body.... pretty cut and dried. C- since we're in a stateless society we can call the "policemen" "security people". If the people know that by being on this road they may be subject to a scan and steps have been taken with the DRO to ensure the safety and non-invasiveness of the scan, then people who don't like it can avoid the road, and if enough people don't like it the road owner won't employ people to scan users of his road. D- It certainly could be impermissible to talk to someone on the street if talking is not allowed by the owner of that street (that would be ridiculous, but not immoral). The action of talking, scanning people, or playing loud music that might damage someone's hearing is not immoral by itself... I would agree that in a statist paradigm where people don't have a choice about being scanned or having loud music played at them then it is immoral. But these are not important issues, if you care whether your neighbors are friendly you don't blast loud music, but the state is one of the leading agents in "not caring what your neighbors think".
  11. Well you see his problem is that he is not "contributing to the system" (AKA: he hasn't greased the right palms) It's only by preserving the integrity of such wonderful systems that we can have wonderful things like bank bailouts. Please think of the executives on Wall Street! How could they afford to have the dents from running over hobos taken out of the bumper of their Rolls Royces without the billions of dollars that we kind tax payers contribute to their charitable companies? Think of the children wont you!!!???
  12. Not to mention the huge amounts of regulation and bureaucracy involved in every step of the process... and there will be plenty more regulations between now and whenever they could possibly launch a rocket to mars. But anyhow.... I guess if they get a few billionaires that need a new hobby, or a couple of billion people who say "Eh, that'd be cool. I'll contribute five bucks." Then maybe they'll have some prayer of making it.
  13. Don't worry, no need to think through the logic when you have studies showing the connection. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24574961 Stress affects the structure of the brain and cause seizures... not exactly overactive fight or flight, but right in line with what the OP was asking about. It looks like there are quite a few studies on it so while "There is a lot of human phenomena that is NOT explained by child abuse"... it looks like epilepsy is NOT one of those
  14. I think it's promising that the two largest bitcoin exchanges have experienced government problems. BTC China not being able to take deposits and Mt.Gox having the evil eye of Sauron turned their way... and yet bitcoin is still going strong!
  15. indeed, I think it is a fruitful area to look for answers if you experience chronic pain. There appear to be a number of books purporting to help with the psychological roots of chronic pain, but who knows how effective that really is. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19845782 This is one study I was reading through. In a group of people seeking treatment for migraines: "Childhood maltreatment was reported as follows: physical abuse 21%, sexual abuse 25%, emotional abuse 38%, physical neglect 22%, and emotional neglect 38%." "physical abuse and emotional abuse and neglect were significantly associated with chronic migraine" Now I know I put " "Chronic pain is caused by abuse" in the title, but "cause" sounds so much better than "were significantly associated with" and also I have reason to believe that my childhood experiences are the most important factor in my chronic headaches. Also:
  16. So, the topic of chronic pain has been of interest to me because I suffer from chronic migraines/headaches. Whenever I saw a doctor they always did tests or scanned something and offered very little help. I have for many years suspected that the pain is connected in some way to my childhood and how I was treated by may parents. But of course that was never suggested by an doctors I visited. Alice Miller and others suggest that chronic pain is related to childhood trauma, but without data that's just... well it seems to easy. I've always been on the lookout for a "gotcha" something to tell me that my parents were awful so I dont' have to confront them. Well I recently did confront them with spectacular results! They're out, but I feel like my life is actually starting at the young age of 31. It's funny how much has changed since then, I've felt better about myself, I've started writing again and that led me to writing on the topic of chronic pain. Much to my surprise there is a considerable amount of evidence for the theory that childhood trauma can cause chronic pain as well as other physiological symptoms in adulthood. Now that I don't need more evidence I've found loads of studies showing that physical abuse and other adverse childhood experiences are strongly correlated with chronic pain. I think in one study 55% of Migraine sufferers admitted experiencing physical abuse, that's not even taking into account emotional, sexual abuse, or neglect...So that is very strong.
  17. Currently there are about 196 nations on earth... so 196 owners of all the land on earth, and this horrendous cartel of colluding landholders has all the guns and moral righteousness in the world. in this world of violence and crazy I can't cross imaginary lines called borders without risking getting shot. Over in the world of voluntary interactions I can walk into Walmart, or Target or just do all my shopping online and if I'm not happy then there are plenty of people on staff to help, and not one of them carries a gun... I'm not real worried about voluntary interactions recreating the state. Wait.... why the left turn into irrational people, game theory, and nuclear war? There's no need for it. I don't care how rich the guy is, he could never buy up all the land. His buying spree would naturally drive up the prices for land to a level that he could not afford to purchase a majority of it.
  18. I find much of what he says to be problematic, or at least... useless. He at no point mentions childhood... which is rather a bit of an oversight when adverse childhood experiences are the leading cause of depression. He calls depression "much too much grief at far too slight a cause."... yeah it seems that way, but he's trying to give some insight into depression and he talks as though depression just hits people at random or people are just moody teenagers who don't know how good they have it and don't have anything to "really" be depressed about. and he talks about the depressed lady with 7 kids as though getting a job and leaving her asshole husband for the loving arms of the government was the way to solve all her problems... I mean come on
  19. This is some pretty transparent garbage being sold as facts... You only have to look at the lack of evidence presented for the claims and of course the mentioning of gods that don't exist as if they do. and of course children could never have negative emotions cause that might cause them to get angry at parents who fed them a steady diet of bullshit about school, sports, Gawd and government! "A few years later, while I was working at Decker Lake Youth Center (a maximum security prison for teenagers) in Salt Lake City, Utah, I met a 15 year old Caucasian boy. I went on to learn that he was raised in a good neighborhood with good parents who had plenty of money. After interviewing him, I learned that his only goal in life was to learn how to blow people up like the infamous, Mark Hoffman. No logical explanation." No coincidence that this is precisely what people said about the kids at Columbine.
  20. Is my daughter weird that she likes to do things like take baths and brush her teeth? Or are most kids like that and you only hear stories from people who have problems? (like negative reviews on Amazon "Don't have a kid! they leak too much!")
  21. The reading, and bribing debate are really big confusing jumbles.... that are well worth looking into! On reading I like what Stepen Krashen has to say on the subject about "free voluntary reading" (which has got a great name...) but I'm not entirely sure how that research would apply. http://www.sdkrashen.com/articles.php?cat=2 basically Krashen's advice boils down to read to your kid, let your kid see you reading, have plenty of interesting books available, and teachers should set aside time to read and read at the same time (presumably a parent could be reading Stephen King, while the kid reads Dr. Seuss or whatever).
  22. It's hot garbage! Someone should have asked "What about the second season?" before getting to the end of the first season. The first season was really intriguing because they played up the suspense pretty well and had plenty of action... after that it slowly degraded into incoherent nonsense (though not as quickly as "Prison Break").
  23. ROCK and ROLL!!!!!!!!! Hey this thread is extreme! Also, that is an epic light-bulb.... it made the phrase "wake and bake" spring to mind.... I don't know why because I've never met anyone who smokes pot out of a lightbulb, though I have heard stories of people smoking crack out of a lightbulb.. anyway, welcome!
  24. wow.... things get nutty when you involve true believers that believe hard in.... whatever I believe that Mary was a virgin but god stuck a really long needle in her and impregnated her that way... that would still make her a virgin, right?
  25. I wouldn't say write a book... that's hardwork and takes a lot of time to pay off... just look at my sig' I can't even give the thing away for free :-P Actually if you're really into some particular subject you could try your hand at non-fiction because people always need good information... Hell you could write a book on businesses for young people! all you have to do is get out there and try a few dozen different ideas, and pretty soon you'll have enough for a book! :-D
