Wow I love all the responses so far. I'm just gonna keep an open mind to see what other perspectives there are on it before I ask further questions or make any comments. But in the meantime:

How can these attributes be indicators as signs of trauma and why? I never understood the reasoning behind it...perhaps because I've never really heard or read the syllogism on it.

Yes, good points on their definition of "success." What I found, or I guess DIDN'T find in this article, is the methodology where they came to the conclusion that spanking causes positive behaviours. They went here's a hypothesis, here's the conclusion, but they didn't explain what positive effects the physical assault causes to the brain.

You can cut down some uhh's because when you do, there seems to be an even awesome flow in your thoughts. Though I do like how the mirror test is a good way to check if someone is projecting or making a valid assertion.

Another indicator of simple teasing is if they let you tease them back without taking it personally. I had a friend who would make fun of me in front of all his other friends, and when I made one joke about him in private, he lost his shit. Whereas the friends I have now, we like to rip on each other equally over innocuous things. Another indicator of abuse is if the jokes are designed to provoke self attack like attacking a vulnerability in the person's personality. I would also like to point out that teasing is playful, while insulting is abusive. Stefan recently talked about how he and Mike do not get to insult each other, but you hear them tease each other lot during the show. I would like to assert that we use two different words for this subject to make it clearer. Taken simply from Google dictionary: tease tēz/ verb 1. make fun of or attempt to provoke (a person or animal) in a playful way. in·sult verb inˈsəlt/ [*] 1. speak to or treat with disrespect or scornful abuse.

I dunno HOW you can approach someone this aggressive who is also proud of the way she acts... Yeah that's a sure fire way to diminish a child's self esteem. Everything they do is going to be judged by a non-present 3rd party and you are to be ashamed of your bodily functions. Something you left out though is how pride is seen as a sin as to not let people embrace their self efficacy. I theorize that there have been ambitious people in ancient times who got self righteous and got so proud to the point of vanity--that religion was needed to humble them out of their egos. But I don't know...I value humility a lot since no one can ever really improve without it, but I also value a reasonable level of pride when one reaches a certain threshold of ability and self appreciation. Basically, religion also teaches kids to be at odds with themselves for simply being human. So why not have the truth apparent to them from the get go, or at least leave them free to think for themselves instead of inflicting conclusions and false dichotomy? Radio waves are detectable when they are broadcasted through a radio as a conduit, and correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't it take like thermal goggles or something to detect dormant radio waves? They're still visible, but require technological instruments to perceive, much like cells and atoms. I don't believe you're being abusive, but simply misunderstanding how abusive religion really can be, so I don't understand why you're getting downvoted for simply being wrong. I would invite you to consider our arguments and continue this discussion since it seems you're being rational in your expression, despite of your claims being a bit off base.

Oh man this is awesome! I listen to music for like 2 hours a day and play just as much. So that's what's going on in my noggin, eh? Thanks for sharing! And yeah sorry about your siblings maltreatment over something...that they were probably obviously jealous of. Intelligence, natural ability and memory aren't things to normally be teased for :S

Hey does anybody listen to any metal or screamo, or any other type of genre of music that has growling or screaming as the primary vocals? If so, can anyone reason out the appeal for me? And if there's anyone else out there who has an aversion to this type of music or just doesn't listen to it, what are your thoughts? Let me put forth the caveat that I used to listen very aggressive music that had a ton of growling and screaming, but have since opted for more melodic vocals. I still listen to a couple of metal bands, but they utilize clean vocals 98% of the time, which is the way it should be. I don't mind the occasional scream or growl, but I prefer to hear a melody if lyrics are to paint on the canvas of instrumentation. I've been trying to get back into distorted guitars and heavy instrumentation because it's the kind of music that got me into music to begin with, but everything I keep finding gets ruined by the flipside of 98-100% of screaming and growling. It's a weird thing for me. Back in 2005 I used to be really into Alexisonfire and the long line of screamo bands that tried to do what they do, but couldn't do it as well as they could. In that band, for those who don't know, there are 3 vocalists: George, Wade, and the now uber famous Dallas Green aka City and Colour. George was the screamer and lead vocalist. He had great quizzical lyrics, and for their first couple albums, odd song structures and scattered placement for their vocals. George would be screaming something completely different from what Dallas or Wade would sing at the same time, and I dunno, even to this day, I still think it's awesome how they achieved it. When I first stumbled upon this music video, I was perplexed by how such a great riff was ruined by some long haired geek was screaming over it, and even the guy singing normally I couldn't even understand what the hell he was saying, but then I got into them. A friend of mine suggested a song off the record and I got into them BIG TIME! Looking back now, I realize that when I would listen to their records, I would really be anticipating for Dallas to come into the song and shed some melodic vocals over the riffs, while I only chose to put up with George. But back then, I had myself convinced that I actually liked screaming, and then would find more bands that utilize it, so long that there were clean vocals "to wait for" and savour. I would even find underground screamo bands that had sub par clean vocals and screaming, but the sub par vocalist would only sound SO good in comparison to the other guy puking over the mic. That video I just linked...to this day I still find enjoyable because it means something to me. But any new music I find that tries to replicate this, or at least has even harasher and stronger vocals, I can't stand it. What are your thoughts on this vocal style? Comparison of what I prefer, and what I want to avoid: I prefer this: over this: I found Affiance through recommendations on Youtube after watching a Protest the Hero music video, which is a Canadian mathy metal band that utilizes clean vocals. I was so relieved to find Affiance. They have more structure than PTH but they remind me of another band I used to listen to called Killswitch Engage that has the same sound, almost the same kind of vocals when they WOULD use clean vocals. August Burns Red on the other hand, I really really love their guitar work and I think instrumentally, they are actually superior to Affiance, but because of the guy puking over the mic, I can't listen to them. It's not that I don't want to, I just physically can't stand too much growling and screaming now lol. I woud actually be really into ABR if they utilized clean vocals, they would sound great. Anyways that's the end of my rant, sorry if I sound like a music snob.

Teaching a child that fairy tales are empirical fact is abusive because it teaches them to reject their own senses. I can see value in telling fictional stories and extrapulating lessons from them, but religious stories are presented as fact. And even if a child isn't threatened with some kind of mystical punishment for not folllowing the religion's edicts, it's still an assault on their sense of reality.

Yeah just horrifying guys... I've gone to church as an Agnostic a few times in my adult life, and even fewer times as an Atheist. I killed the cat of my curiousity by making the regrettable choice of going to my nephew's Confirmation. My GOD my brain was hurting. To accept the "Lord" into his life, he had to agree to enact 7 virtues, most of which were fine like wisdom, love, and courage etc. The Triforce plus three others, BUT the one that made me involuntarily cringe was Fear of the Lord, and the way the priest explained how important that last one is... Well it invoked a ton of sympathy for my nephew that he is being roped into this indoctrination, thinking it was the right thing to do. I remember being Confirmed and the teachers at school saying that there was no peer pressure in not wanting to get confirmed. It was weird...they said there was no peer pressure in an implicit way that still made you feel left our and awkward for thinking of not going through with it. One of the bargaining chips was a religious retreat where you get a day off school to go to a ski hill (and not doing any skiing and instead) to do some more rituals and get free food. Or you could spend the day at school in study hall. What fun was that gonna be without the advent of iPhones and Nintendo DS's? NONE! Well there were Gameboys, but I was still too poor back then to afford one. Anyways, religion really racks my brain. Finding this video liked by my uncle on my Facebook feed warranted an automatic UNSUBSCRIBE!

Also, sorry to hear that you had overgrown children for parents...that must've not felt as stable as you needed to be free to be a child. And what kind of music do you want to write with your band? More emotional stuff or political stuff? Hell, both?
